Why do I teach and perform?

Music and harps are my life, and always have been. As a lifelong professional musician, I believe it is my duty to share the knowledge I’ve accrued from 20 years of harp playing and learning. Without my teachers, I would have never found my love and passion for sharing music, so I make it my priority to continue what they started. After all, there would be no music nor musical traditions without our teachers!

Similarly, I continue to perform in order to share that knowledge aurally. I know harps aren’t as commonly known about nor heard today as they have been in the past, and as an extensively trained harpist, my playing has the ability to touch others in ways I had never known, so I try to share my music as often as possible.

Alice Rose Statham

Alice Rose Statham, 24, has been playing harp for 20 years. She began studying harp at the age of 5 with Ruth Hunter, and two years later began studying with Curtis alum Anne Sullivan until graduating high school in 2018. Alice received numerous musical awards through those years, including PMEA All-State harpist from 2016-2018, and the NaFME All-National harpist in 2017. She has since received two degrees in harp performance at Carnegie Mellon University School of Music, studying with Juilliard alum and Pittsburgh Symphony harpist, Gretchen Van Hoesen. Her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Harp Performance was received in May 2022, while her Master of Music in Harp Performance will be received in May 2024.
While at CMU, Alice performed numerous recitals, performing solo and chamber works Her performance experience stretches over a vast range of music styles and ensembles, from performing music written for solo harp in a church, to small chamber groups of two or three in a wedding, to the CMU Contemporary Ensemble, The Who in PPG Paints, or subbing for PSO in Heinz Hall. As a chamber musician, Alice performed frequently with cello, viola, flute, violin, and many other instruments in and around Pittsburgh. The Chalice Duo, with cellist Devin LaMarr, won the Pittsburgh Concert Society’s Majors auditions in 2023, and continue to perform together for special events.
Shortly before graduation, Alice began performing as Nemacolin Resort’s harpist. Her performances feature works by Bach, Marcel Grandjany, Carlos Salzedo, Paul Hindemith, among many others. Alice carefully curates her “set lists”, which include recital and competition repertoire, alongside arrangements of familiar tunes and other pieces in order to achieve the ambience offered in the Chateau.
